Geologist Ted Kihl, about to lose his job because of his drinking, is trapped by a rock fall deep in a cave in Malaysia. Peter Thornton, an old friend, abandons other business to lead the rescue and arranges a costly airlift of drilling equipment without authority from London, where Brian Stead is preparing a much bigger gamble of his own.
