Peter Thornton rejoins Mogul to remove the company's drilling rig from New Zealand, hoping that success will earn him a seat on the board. The rig is run by his old friend Ed Ahu Riri, and the crew refuse to leave, drilling on in the hope of striking oil in time, leaving Thornton torn between admiration for the crew, loyalty to the company and his own ambitions.
